A small flock of mallard ducks come in for a landing in an old mill pond in Donald Blakney's waterfowl print MILL POND MALLARDS. In the beginning of the industrial revolution, water wheels provided the energy needed to grind wheat into flour or cut wood into boards. Some water wheels were fed by water from a mill pond, which formed when a flowing stream was dammed up to force the water over the wheel.
